AFTER THE LONDON BOMBINGS
We condemn the terrorist bombings of London on 7 July 2005 in the strongest possible term. The targeting and killing of innocent civilians has no place in civil society and is against the teachings of Islam. Our deepest thoughts are with those who have been killed and injured and we express our condolences to their families.
As the result of the investigation unfolds, unscrupulous elements of the public are taking advantage of the incident to justify abuses and attacks against the Muslim community.
It is necessary for us to take all necessary precautions against any possible attacks or abuses, to pray to Allah to protect us and to have faith that Allah will protect us. It is also important that we continue with our lives and remain committed to spreading Islam using our wisdom, by showing good examples, and equipping ourselves with knowledge so that we can reject misinterpretations with stronger arguments.
Allah says in the holy Quran: “Invite (all) to the Way of thy Lord with wisdom and beautiful preaching; and argue with them in ways that are best and most gracious: for thy Lord knoweth best, who have strayed from His Path, and who receive guidance”. (Chapter 16, Verse 125).
We subscribe to the teachings of Islam that preaches moderation and tolerance, and we have to play a role in strengthening moderate and tolerant Islam. If we choose to be absent and silent and do not voice out our views, the views of the extremists, racists and neo-Nazis will prevail unopposed.
Whether we like it or not, Islam and the Muslims are now on the spotlight. We can choose to hide our identity or we can maintain our identity. It is better for us to maintain our identity by showing good examples and continuing to make contributions to the community we live in, regardless or whether they are Muslims or not. The result will not be instant but we hope that the non-Muslims will see the good values of being a Muslim and the real beauty of Islam.
